About IFHAS — founded 1965

Ingatestone and Fryerning History and Archaeology Society was founded in 1965 to promote interest in the history of the village and of the county of Essex. A brief summary of the history of the village can be found on PAGE 6 A list of famous people associated with the village can be found on PAGE 7

IFHAS meets on the first Tuesday of each month throughout the year, with the exception of January. Each month a talk of about an hour’s duration is given by an experienced speaker on a subject of relevance to the history of the village or the county — people, places, events or themes. Entry to individual talks for non-members is charged at £5. The programme of talks for the current year can be found on PAGE 2

In addition to the monthly talks there is a separate programme of walks and excursions to places of historical interest – perhaps visits to local stately homes, to nearby towns or villages with an interesting history or themed walks. These are arranged at cost only. A list of walks and excursions for the current year can be found on PAGE 3

The Society’s year runs from June to May and an annual subscription giving access to all the meetings and priority booking for other events, costs £20. The Annual General Meeting of the Society is held in May, when there is no scheduled talk, to receive the accounts of the Society and to elect the officers of the Society for the forthcoming year. A list of Contacts for the Society can be found on PAGE 4.

A long-standing feature of the Society’s activities has been its association with the Anglo European School in the village. The Society awards prizes annually for the best history essays written by members of the School’s Sixth Form.

IFHAS Research Awards

The Society has instituted an award for researchers to enable them to undertake research into the history of the village of the county or of people in some way closely associated with either.

  1. The layout of this site great, and easy to follow, and will be even better when the technically skilled have uploaded some photos!

And nice to be public-spirited and have info from the Horticultural Soc., whose initials are so similar to the Historical Soc.!
