An annual research award to encourage original research into the history of Ingatestone and Fryerning and surrounding area; people connected with Ingatestone; and the county of Essex.
Details and guidelines .
- An award of £250 annually to encourage original research into the history of Ingatestone and Fryerning and surrounding area; people connected with Ingatestone; and the county of Essex.
- The award to be made after consideration by a sub-committee of the IFHAS Committee comprising the Chair and two others and to be approved by the full committee.
- The award shall be to defray expenses incurred; research fees; purchase of books or materials in pursuit of the research; and the like
- The research must result in a lecture to be given to the Society within one year of the completion of the research.
- The completion will be signified by a written report to the IFHAS sub-committee by the researcher, subject to any amendments the committee shall require.
- Payments will be on a staged basis of £100 on acceptance of the research proposal; £100 three months after the research proposal is accepted, subject to a satisfactory report on progress; and £50 on completion of the lecture.
- Proposals for research will be considered each November with announcement of the award to be made each subsequent January.
- The research report will be posted on the IFHAS website and any subsequent use of the research will note the initial support of the IFHAS.
As examples of subjects that might be researched the following might be helpful:
- The character of Ingatestone in the 1920s and 1930s
- Early industry in and around Ingatestone — building materials; gas supply; smithing; milling and so on
- The origin of Ingatestone street names
- The fairs held in Ingatestone— 17th, 18th and 19th centuries

And nice to be public-spirited and have info from the Horticultural Soc., whose initials are so similar to the Historical Soc.!
